Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology

Project Vertigo

The EngD is a 4-year postgraduate studentship conducting research on the sponsor’s project whilst based at the sponsor’s premises. It is EPSRC’s* premier research qualification and the programme includes 15 short courses of 1 week’s duration, held at the University. The EngD Research Engineer appointed will receive a stipend of approximately £29,000 funded by EPSRC* and the sponsor. Stipends are normally tax free.

This project aims to develop a methodology to be used in optimising supply chain logistics, so that carbon emission reductions can be achieved without compromising the achievement of other important service objectives. Working with the Neutral Group, a supply chain and logistics carbon consultancy working with the global supply chain industry, the work will include developing an understanding of logistics supply chains, researching low carbon technology choices at stages through the chain, and developing methods of assessing and selecting options. As new and promising technologies are identified, supply chains that include them could be used as case studies to test and validate the approaches developed. This would also ensure that the Research Engineer would have a chance to be involved in trials as part of the project, ensuring that the outputs have practical application as well as being academically rigorous.

The successful candidate will commence their EngD in April/May 2008 or as soon after as possible. The deadline for applications is 7 April 2008 and interviews will be held on the 14 April 2008.

The Researcher will be based at the Neutral Group’s UK and EMEA Office in Bracknell, Berkshire.

We are looking for a suitably qualified and well-rounded graduate who can conduct research and meet demanding deadlines whilst working in a busy organisation. The ideal candidate will be a broad, innovative thinker with good communication skills and an outgoing personality.

In terms of academic qualifications, applicants will need to have a first degree in a relevant engineering/science discipline (first class or upper second only). Additional experience in one or more of the following would be useful: renewable energy technologies and low carbon transport; prior industrial experience, experience in collecting and synthesizing large amounts of information, quantitative analysis, modelling or computer programming experience.
