Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology
Heavy Charger Project
The EngD is a 4-year postgraduate studentship conducting research on an industrial project whilst based at the sponsor’s premises. It is EPSRC’s* premier research qualification and the programme includes 15 short courses of 1 week’s duration, held at the University. The EngD Research Engineer appointed will receive a stipend of approximately £29,000 funded by EPSRC* and the sponsor. Stipends are normally tax free.
This project aims to investigate the possible technologies and the optimal design for a large (>18 tons) heavy goods vehicle, propelled entirely by electric motors. The vehicle’s electrical design and options for battery recharge will be assessed against both performance and cost criteria to ensure that either a commercially viable solution, or the technical roadmap toward implementation, is proposed.
The successful candidate will commence their EngD in April/May 2008 or as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is 7th April 2008 and interviews will be held on: 14th April 2008.
The researcher will be based at the Neutral Group’s UK & EMEA Office in Bracknell, Berkshire.
We are looking for a suitably qualified and well-rounded graduate who can conduct research and meet demanding deadlines whilst working in a busy organisation. The ideal candidate will be a broad, innovative thinker with good communication skills and an outgoing personality.
Experience in Computer Aided Design for both Mechanical and Electrical engineering and the use of MATLAB/Simulink™, or similar, packages for system design is desirable. Knowledge of vehicle and/or electrical system design is also desirable. In terms of academic qualifications, applicants must have a minimum of an upper second class degree in a relevant engineering and/or science discipline.
